I’m running because I believe government has gotten too far away from the people it is supposed to serve. As a fifth-generation Kansan, a father, grandfather, and longtime small-business owner, I care deeply about the future we are leaving our children and grandchildren. I've spent years involved in Kansas politics, and I've seen how difficult it can be for ordinary citizens to have their concerns heard. Rising property taxes, government overreach, and a lack of accountability are among the issues that convinced me to run. I don't pretend to have all the answers. My experience in business, real estate, and public service has taught me the importance of listening, asking questions, understanding the consequences of decisions, and being willing to challenge the status quo. I'm running because I believe public office should be about serving people, not protecting political parties or careers. I want to bring that approach to representing the people of Bourbon and Linn counties in Topeka.
I believe we need to fundamentally change how Kansas taxes property, with the long-term goal of eliminating residential property taxes. People shouldn't have to keep paying the government simply to remain in homes they already own. We also need greater transparency in property valuations and more accountability for government spending.
Government should operate openly and answer to the people it serves. I support ending the legislative practice known as "Gut and Go," making legislation easier for citizens to follow, reviewing unnecessary spending, and requiring greater transparency in government decisions.
Technology has made it easier than ever for government to monitor ordinary citizens. I want meaningful limits and oversight on surveillance technologies, including automated license plate readers (ALPRs). Public safety matters, but so do privacy, due process, and our constitutional protections.
Decisions should be made as close to the people affected as reasonably possible. Too often, Topeka imposes one-size-fits-all policies on communities with very different needs. I want local governments and citizens to have greater control over local decisions while respecting individual rights.
Government should not be able to permanently take someone's property merely because they are suspected of wrongdoing. I support requiring a criminal conviction before property can be forfeited, along with stronger due-process protections.
I support legalizing and regulating marijuana for adults 21 and older, using an approach similar to alcohol. Adults should be free to make their own decisions while remaining responsible for the consequences. Law enforcement resources should focus on crimes involving actual victims rather than peaceful adult behavior.
I oppose giving government the irreversible power to execute someone. Our justice system is operated by human beings, and mistakes happen. Life imprisonment without parole provides a way to protect society without risking an irreversible execution.
I support legislation protecting members of the Kansas National Guard from deployment into overseas combat without a congressional declaration of war, consistent with constitutional requirements. Sending our service members into harm's way should require clear constitutional accountability.
Government should live within its means, just as families and businesses must. I oppose special tax breaks and financial incentives that favor selected corporations at taxpayers' expense. Kansas should create a fair environment where businesses compete without government choosing winners and losers.
I support term limits for Kansas legislators. Public service should not become a lifetime career. Regular turnover can bring new perspectives and give more Kansans opportunities to participate in their government.
